RAIN

Playing it cool? No problem.

I never sweat the small stuff.

But watching Sterling kiss Aura back at the water utility was definitely not small. In fact, it was the biggest thing that had happened to me since I’d knocked back a shot of Arcanum.

When Sterling swept her up against him and the two of them practically melted into one another, time staggered. Not like that weird lurch of stillness you get in the Otherwise, either. More like looking back at the path I’d been walking, and seeing that all the points I thought I could’ve turned and gone another route were nothing more than dead ends. And every single road had been leading to this one place.

In the face of such inevitability, I wondered if free will even existed. Or whether I particularly cared.

Because when Sterling kissed my Princess, I realized with a shining clarity that I wasn’t jealous, not at all. If anything, I wanted them to keep going.

And that wasn’t even the epiphany.

No, the big realization that had to practically smack me between the eyes was that all these years, I’d been telling myself the three-ways were about including Zephyr, so he didn’t have to feel left out. To pave his way with the ladies he was too tongue-tied to approach.

So easy to lie to myself. I guess that’s no surprise. After all, I’m dangerously familiar with all my own weaknesses.

It wasn’t just the physical act of sex that got me off—it was the whole idea. The anticipation, the connection, the entire nebulous undertaking, from eyes meeting across a crowded room to fluids cooling on the sheets. And one guy can only last so long—but treat a lady right, and she can go all night….

The summer I was seventeen, after the horrible rash had finally faded enough for me to be seen in public without a shirt, was a summer of high highs and low lows—and I’m not talking about the weather. It was the summer my best friend’s mom fell asleep behind the wheel commuting between her multiple jobs. It was the summer his jerk of a dad said “fuck it all” and moved away…while Zeph was at work. But it was also the summer where the two of us had a whole house to ourselves—at least until the bank repossessed.

It was the summer we both popped our cherries. With the same girl. At the same time.

I wouldn’t say my parents were exactly uneasy about me living unsupervised in the house Mr. Hefner abandoned—after all, they’d never been big on rules. Plus, they were right next door. Maybe they thought it was good practice, since actual adulthood was looming on the horizon. But for all their hands-off parenting, they did find occasional reasons to drop by unannounced.

The afternoon mom and I had our big heart-to-heart, I wasn’t doing anything particularly special, just scrolling through some old playlists while I halfheartedly scanned the want ads. Luckily, I was alone—but only the night before, we’d talked a buddy’s big sister into coming over for a few beers, and one thing led to another….
